Changing States - "Moovin’ back taa Texas!”

“Weeaaalll….” She said in her Texas southern drawl, “We sold the haaaaoooouse! (House) Weeeeeaaarrrrrrrrr moovin’ back taa Texas!” I was in a state of shock and not believing what I just heard.  “What? I did not know you even put the house on the market!” I said with disbelief. “We did for six hours! That’s all it took six hours!” She said with excitement. “Well, I want to come by and take more pictures before you take it all apart.”…

Change is Good - Chocolate Inspired Tips

Change is good! Ruth Dyer Someday when I am grown, I will look back and then I will know,I once was a chef, a teacher, a decorator, and nurse,That no matter what road I travel or which path I traverse, I can look back and I can always see,That little girl in the picture, in the chef’s hat, that’s me!

Bloom Where You Are Planted - "Not" a Designer Home

I stood back and looked at the finished and decorated room, the last project that I could complete before I left for Key West, and I was happy! What better way to kick off a vacation than by creating a guest room with such a Key West Vibe. I thought about how far this little Amarillo had come and I was taken back in time to three years ago and the words a homeowner said to me right before I…

Beach Dream a Taste of Florida for Guest in The Villages

The countdown is at zero and that is where I am, at Mile marker zero! Hi Everyone from Key West! The way that I intend for this Saturday to go is to start with a long walk around the island. I like to see how things have changed. What is still in business and what is not in business? I love to walk by houses shrouded in lush foliage and see a cat lazing on the porch. They always ignore…

A Fresh Breath of Air

The sun slid down behind the skyline like water down the skin of ripe peach, moving slowly at first and then gaining momentum until it is gone. It quivered in the horizon its light reflecting off the towering glass buildings that are so prevalent in the Atlanta Skyline. I watched from my hotel room, sunsets are beautiful in any city, and my mind wondered to a city as far south as you can go. In Fourteen days I will watch…

A New View

The circle on the screen went round and round and I waited for the inbox to fill. What was this, I wondered as I saw the name Scott Dyer appear in the bar with an attachment entitled “two months until you see this” and an “Open Me”! I double clicked on the attachment and there it was a picture of the view that I will look at in two months, entitled “Southernmost View”. Anyone who knows me or reads my…

A Dash of Spice Makes Everything Nice

I heated the burner up and placed the 2 pounds of fresh lean ground sirloin in the pan. I added some salt and pepper to bring out the flavor but keep the taste simple and pure. Lots of attention is paid to the stirring of the meat so that none of it will burn. Finally, when the meat looks nicely browned I drain the grease off, and pour it into the crock pot and taste. I open two twenty ounce…

A Touch of the Sea

It all started with the expansion of their home. They were “adding on” and wanted to know if they were going in the right direction. Sandy wanted a coastal feeling in the home but was unsure of how to achieve it...

A Whole New You

With each flip of the calendar year, our heads fill with thoughts of change and my head is no different. I want all types of change for myself. I envision life in 09 to be filled with healthy foods, frequent and productive visits to the gym, and I don’t believe I will crave sweets in the New Year. I fully expect to get back into my size ten pants and maybe a size eight if so motivated. I will train…

A Good Recipe

I preheated the oven to 350 degrees and set the timer for 25 minutes. Then I stirred the dry ingredients, 2 cups sugar, 2 cups flour, and 1 tsp. salt, together in my mixing bowl. I was craving the food of the gods, chocolate cake, and nothing would stop me from having it. I filled a saucepan on the stove with 1cup water, one stick butter, ½ cup oil, and three heaping Tbsps. of Coco powder. While I waited for…

A Colorful Life

I scanned the crowd taking in what was a sight for sore eyes; a crowd of women in every rendition of the “classic” purple dress. Sitting atop their heads like crowns, were bright red hats of distinction; some had feathered masks on top, while others demurred with dainty southern bows. We shared a collective chuckle when I asked,” Who in here has white, off-white, or crème walls…”, and slowly the majority of the hands began to rise. While sharing this…
