Decorating Tips

Change is Good

I often hear that “change is good”, but what if the change is not good? I don’t like trying a new meal at a restaurant and not liking it. I don’t like getting a different haircut and crying when it is done. I don’t like getting low fat cheese by accident because I did not read the package!

True Blue

I clicked open my email and stared in fascination at the picture titled, “Endless Journey” the newest offering from Alan Maltz in Key West. The sky was the most beautiful cerulean blue met at the horizon by the clearest teal water, so beautiful it looked like blown glass. The sky was dappled with tiny puffs of white and running into the horizon there is a solitary dock that seems endless.

Budget Friendly Makeover

I have never had a customer say, “I have an endless budget.” Often, refurbishments of spaces are done on a budget but the customers are not sure what to get rid of and what to keep. Since my roots are in “Use what you have decorating”, I like to incorporate the old things that will still work for the new look and get rid of the things that will not work.

Light Bright and Less

Kitchen cabinets can be a huge conundrum for many. Do we decorate them? Do we leave them bare? Do we use greens? How much is too much and so on and so on? I will hear one client tell me, “I don’t like a lot of stuff above my cabinets”, and the next client I meet will say, “We should put some stuff up there above the cabinets, what do you think?”

Orange Pop

Frequent visits to my Grandmother’s house occurred during the summer months when we were free from the shackles of school. Her house was the quintessential “Cracker” model set back in a field on the side of highway 54, surrounded by orange groves in Zephyrhills Florida. We would run through the groves collecting navels and tangerines and reconvene on the sprawling front porch to eat our citrus treasures, while daring one another to try a sour kumquat off the tree in…

Sunset Colors

Cerulean Sky is a vast canopy as the sun begins its descent into the deep ocean. All eyes are on the swath of bright coral that fills the space between sky and ocean while a hot band of orange sits just above the water line looking as if it radiates out from the sun.

Living Large

Patio villas are perfect for our winter friends and anyone else who wants to live worry and fancy free! The Cabot Cove is 1190 square feet of efficient living. Some would say that is small but I would say it makes life easy! However, decorating them can be as big a challenge as a Gardenia or Lantana. The solution to a fabulous patio villa is to always rely on steadfast design theory to see your project through.

Bold Gold

Gold throughout history has been a sign of power and wealth; this metal of opulence and kingship has been stolen by pirates and found by the hunters of treasure. The symbol of winning is always a gold medal while silver is a strong second.

You can take it with you!

My teacher always told me that I must learn to add in my head because, “You can’t carry a calculator everywhere you go.” Boy was she wrong! The IPhone settled that! Another untruth promoted by so many is, “You can’t take it with you when you go!” I don’t agree with that since I have personally witnessed and helped five customers this year, “take it with them when they go”. I know that you can’t take things to the great…

The Quick Change

There is a time in everyone’s decorating life when they look at their guest room and feel very overwhelmed. Often that happens when guests are on the way for a week’s visit. You think to yourself; “My daughter’s old bedroom set won’t cut it anymore.” As you prepare to get rid of that set you slowly realize after three consignment stores refuse it for resale; you will need to donate it after all. Before running out to buy a whole…

Collected Life

I drilled the anchor into the wall; it needed to be strong to hold this piece of history. I hung the newly framed sign from the historic and now gone, Iron Curtain and stood back to take it all in. The collection, the life, the story of one man displayed in this Gardenia bedroom for him and his family to see.
