Decorating Tips

Traditional Decadence and just a little more!

My niece is obsessed with the flavor vanilla so when I heard her say “MMMMMMMM!” as she put the first bite of cake in her mouth, I knew we had a winner! I pushed my fork down into the first thick layer of cake as my mouth watered in anticipation. I watched as the fork moved through the layer of frosting and onto the second layer of cake, then a little more frosting and finally the third layer was broken…

A Few New Things

“Aunt Ruth! Will you take me shopping for Black Friday?” Regan asked with excitement. I was recalling my nieces request while I stood in line and wondered; “If it is this bad now what would the after Thanksgiving Day crowd be like?” The line was ten deep and I needed to buy just a few towels to complete another guest bath in time for Thanksgiving. It is not often that I have to say “no” to clients wanting a quick…

Open and Inviting

“Your work must be so much fun!” is a comment that I hear often and the many who have said this throughout the years would be right! When my niece was younger she accompanied me to many homes for consultation and still does; I remember saying to her, “You are going to think that work is driving to houses to talk about decorating and then collect a check.”

Welcome to the Sun

Feathery pink wisps glow against a bright teal sky on the horizon as I turned my van onto Morse Blvd and descended down the hill. Approaching the bridge I could see the palm tree tops backlit in grey scale, whipping in the wind and the outline of birds heading off to a roost for the night. I drive home most nights in the twilight hour now that the time has changed and what I enjoy most about this time of…

Guest Bath Cheers

“Nine, Ten, Eleven, Mermaid spins!” I yelled so that my niece could hear me. She popped her head out of the pool with excitement and said, “Now watch me do my back flip and count them!” “Miss Ruth, Miss Ruth can you count my spins too?” Her friend Cassidy yelled from the side of the pool as Regan back flipped in the water. Now that the pool is finished, Regan wants to start having family feasts and pool parties with…

Timeless Design

“I hung the pictures of the butterflies above my bed, all by myself, and it looks amazing!” my niece Regan said with excitement. “By yourself? Did you know how to hang a hook in the wall?” I asked. “Uh! Aunt Ruth! I learned by watching youuuuu…uh!” she said with exasperation as if I should have known.

Modern Relationships

I can officially add match-making to my resume! It is not often that I attempt to bring two people together but on this rare occasion it came to me suddenly in a meeting with contractors. I was listening to the kitchen guy and the granite guy talk details of their work to the homeowner and suddenly I was tuned out because another signal was coming in and the volume was loud. Like inspiration dropping from the sky, the thought formed…

No More Oak

Last Thursday amid frantic storm preparation, I turned the final corner on my street as my house came into view. A crane with large arms spread across my lawn with a several story high boom extended into my back yard. A man dangled from the crane with a chainsaw in his hand as he approached the last two remaining water oaks threatening my new pool.

Color Blue

Unable to swim in water that is less than 80 degrees, I could not participate in the inaugural swim for the opening of the Dyer Family Pool. It is official what started six weeks ago with a hole in ground is now a pool! The three bubblers along the back of the pool magically began to arch water into the center of the pool creating a soft waterfall sound.

Something Different

“Can we go horseback riding Aunt Ruth?” my niece asked with expectation. “Yes I think so but why the sudden interest in horses?” I asked. “I really want to try something different and it sounds exciting!” Regan replied with wide eyes.

Indoor-Outdoor Fun

This time of year all Floridians look forward to the first day of fall. Not because the leaves change and everything will be awash in amber tones but because there is a slight shift in the air. As daytime approaches dusky twilight the temperature softens and a gentle breeze will find its way over the rolling hills of golf courses. If you are lucky it will move through the open birdcage or screened in lanai as you enjoy cocktail hour…
