Decorating Tips

Stuck

I pointed my toe and dunked just the tip of it in the sparkling clear water. The water was cold and a little niggle of anxiety stopped me from proceeding. I pulled my toe out and thought for a moment about what to do now. “You need to do it!” my husband said. “Just jump in and get it over with!”

Turtle Tracks

There has been so much attention put upon birds and their northern migration patterns that even a segment of society has been nick-named “snow birds”. Those of the retired life have been given the esteemed and beloved title since they migrate north for the summer. But not everyone goes north for the summer! There are many who go further south or way out west and some to Europe.

Suspended Time

Regan’s little head lay serenely on her hands that were folded beneath it. She was out! She had been watching a video at the table and she could not stay awake another minute. She surrendered to sleep with the video still on and when I found her that way I snapped the shot with my phone. I can’t ever erase this photo of a moment in time because in that photo she will always be four years old.

Wish Lists

“Do you know what you would like to do for your birthday?” I asked my niece Regan. “I want to go to Claire’s and maybe walk around the mall and theeeeenn….” she said dragging out the middle vowel, “I want to go to your house and go swimming! Then I want to take a long bath and then I want to watch a movie” she said with excitement.

Seashells but not by the Seahore

I have been writing about going to the beach my niece for years! When she was four and not as wordy as she is now, she would pick up shells and hold them up and say, “Shell mine”. We would take the shells and stuff them in our pockets or make small piles by the beach blanket to take home at the end of the day.

Spring is on the Way

The cool night air wrapped around me giving me a chill and my arms covered in goose bumps. It was hard to believe that it had been 80 degrees this afternoon and now I needed a sweater. The sky was a brilliant canopy of stars with the Big Dipper being the most apparent constellation of them all. The smell of orange wafted my way encircling me with the smell of fresh spring. The gardener “my husband” had just trimmed the…

Where Palm Trees Sway

Weekend getaways lead me to where the palm trees sway casting shadows across the sea of sand in front on me. I watched my niece practice gymnastics on the hard packed sand of Jensen Beach while I sat with my toes buried and wriggling around in the cool dampness of the Florida treasure coast. I looked just beyond the cartwheels near the shoreline to the horizon where azure cloudless sky meets green sea and refreshing relaxation washed over me like…

Iris, the goddess

The “Iris” is not just the name of a popular model home in The Villages and an “Iris” is not just a flower. Iris is a goddess and according to Greek mythology, her father was a marine god and her mother was a cloud nymph. I am sure you are wondering what you get when a marine god and a cloud nymph get together and you would be right if you guessed, the goddess of sea and sky, Iris!

Blue on Blue

Of all the colors that you can think of, what color is the hottest and the coolest at the same time. What color has been proven to lower the heart rate and is associated with serenity? What color promotes intellectual stimulation and trustworthiness but sometimes can be perceived as cold and without emotion? What color is found the least in food we eat?

Sunrise to Sunset

The islands name in Spanish means deep bay and her name is Bahia Honda located at mile marker 37 and she is 500 acres of lush green life. Her surrounding waters are filled with great snorkeling and from her shores you can see a piece of history! Henry Flagler’s, Florida East coast highway constructed between 1905 and 1912 ran beside her as the first railroad to take the original “Snowbirds” to roost in Key West for the winters. They would…

Let’s Go Hawaiian

I stood on my front porch in the strange balmy winds of last week’s storm and tried not to worry about tornados. The warm winds felt like Hawaii so I closed my eyes and took a trip back in time. I remembered the flames from the torches that leapt toward the sky and those warm trade winds that wrapped me in their wispy embrace. All eyes turned toward the sea as strong brown arms raised the conch shell sending out…
