Decorating Tips

Let’s Go Hawaiian

I stood on my front porch in the strange balmy winds of last week’s storm and tried not to worry about tornados. The warm winds felt like Hawaii so I closed my eyes and took a trip back in time. I remembered the flames from the torches that leapt toward the sky and those warm trade winds that wrapped me in their wispy embrace. All eyes turned toward the sea as strong brown arms raised the conch shell sending out…

Grand Floridian

We entered the small boat that would take us the short distant to her shores. The sun was beginning to set as we approached and I felt as if we were going back in time to an era that was grand. Her red roofline was reminiscent of the southernmost house and her architecture was iconic and decadently filled with fretwork and sprawling porches. We followed the beautiful pathways winding through lush green grass. Children were laughing as they ran around…

Memories

We held our hands close to our heart as the haunting refrain of Taps rose high above us. The sound dissipated note by note up into the vast entwined canopies of large and ancient oaks. We were there beneath those trees at the Florida National Veterans Cemetery to celebrate the life of my Father-in-law. Shots rang out against a bright blue sky; the final salute was done.

Refresh and Renew

From the last week of December into the first week of January is a great time for personal projects. Often, my clients are with family, Christmas trees are up and decorating is on hold until the holidays conclude but for me that means time on my hands for my house.

New Discoveries are powerful

“I feel so powerful!” my niece said with excitement. “I love my fingernails like this!” She said, again with more enthusiasm. “What is different about them?” I asked because I was working and she was with Grandma. “Well Grandma bought me press on nails so now they look like real nails!” she explained. “I can send you a text so you can see!”

Coastal Latitude

The Key West Christmas sky was bright azure blue and the wind whipped in light breezes tinged with just enough coolness that a light sweater was appropriate for the day. As the green water and blue skies congealed into a calming teal, I stared out toward the horizon and let the relaxation wash over me. So often I hear, “Well we don’t live near the coast.”

Christmas Three Hundred Sixty Five Days a Year

Golden strands of hair pulled up into a perfect ballerina bun are highlighted by a sparkly silver bow that shimmers under the stage lights. Her dress is layers of silver tulle that cascade out from a beautiful silver lace bodice tied at the back with a silver ribbon creating another beautiful bow. My niece was standing at the back left stage in the choir but she was obscured by the young man in front of her. The only time I…

Letter to Santa

I clicked on the subject line “Wide hallways near front door” and my email popped open. She liked my column! Thank You! I thought. She goes on to write that she has been watching but has not seen an answer to her problem of a large foyer and what to do with it. I felt a little like Santa getting a letter and a request! I was so excited that I immediately pulled the photo card out of my camera…

Traditional Decadence and just a little more!

My niece is obsessed with the flavor vanilla so when I heard her say “MMMMMMMM!” as she put the first bite of cake in her mouth, I knew we had a winner! I pushed my fork down into the first thick layer of cake as my mouth watered in anticipation. I watched as the fork moved through the layer of frosting and onto the second layer of cake, then a little more frosting and finally the third layer was broken…

A Few New Things

“Aunt Ruth! Will you take me shopping for Black Friday?” Regan asked with excitement. I was recalling my nieces request while I stood in line and wondered; “If it is this bad now what would the after Thanksgiving Day crowd be like?” The line was ten deep and I needed to buy just a few towels to complete another guest bath in time for Thanksgiving. It is not often that I have to say “no” to clients wanting a quick…

Open and Inviting

“Your work must be so much fun!” is a comment that I hear often and the many who have said this throughout the years would be right! When my niece was younger she accompanied me to many homes for consultation and still does; I remember saying to her, “You are going to think that work is driving to houses to talk about decorating and then collect a check.”
