“I feel so powerful!” my niece said with excitement. “I love my fingernails like this!” She said, again with more enthusiasm. “What is different about them?” I asked because I was working and she was with Grandma. “Well Grandma bought me press on nails so now they look like real nails!” she explained. “I can send you a text so you can see!” she said and hung up the phone quickly to start texting. It was invigorating to hear her excitement over her discovery and as I waited for the text to arrive my mind wondered to thoughts about new discoveries, excitement and the approaching New Year. Though I have been decorating houses for a long time there are always new discoveries to be made and this past year I have many discoveries to share. Let’s take a peek into a space that demonstrates some of these discoveries somewhere in the Heart of the Villages.
• Granite backsplash
This summer I discovered that a granite backsplash is less expensive than installing a tile backsplash! While redoing a kitchen for an out of town client I priced out everything and managed the project. We installed new granite and we priced the granite as the backsplash, only to discover that it was a 400.00 savings. When granite is the backsplash there is no grout to deal with and granite as the backsplash is a very high-end look!
• Indoor Outdoor curtains
This year we finished several lanai’s with Sunbrella indoor outdoor curtains. These curtains can get wet and be subjected to the sun. We hung them to add color and softness to the lanai and create a finished looking space. Indoor outdoor curtains can be pricey but they are worth it.
• Amazing Awnings
This year was a year to add overhead awnings to birdcages. The awnings are added to the top of the birdcage and are attached by a beam that allows the awning to float above the birdcage. The color of the awning is tied into the color of the house roof. The end result is the feeling of a room that is outside. The breeze blows through it nicely and it feels like a southern porch. Awnings allow you to reclaim space that is lost to sun and rain under the birdcage.
• Televisions can be moved
Televisions can be moved and attached to the outside wall of the Gardenia model. It can be done and we have done it! I have often times run into opposition when a “Negative Nancy” tells me it cannot be done because the cable company said it can’t be done. Never let a space tell you how it will be decorated, you tell the space how it is going to be decorated!
• One piece of stunning art
Try to incorporate one piece of stunning art into the space. The living room is the space that should be amazing and you want it to be memorable. We usually try to have a punchy feature piece on the natural focal wall above the sofa.
• Molding is still the king
The addition of crown molding is always going to improve a space and makes the house look finished. Casement molding around the large slider is right up there with crown molding. Casement molding with a header, frames out the view or the lanai just beyond the slider. When crown molding is added and casement molding is installed around the slider the end result is beautiful and finished looking.
• Don’t be afraid of color
Strong color is personal choice vs. soft color. If you have always wanted to have strong colors give it a try! The worst that can happen is you might like it.
