Kool-Aid Hair

Written by

Long blonde hair floated like a halo around Regan’s head as she held her breathe and demonstrated her floating abilities. I looked a little closer and all of the ends of her hair about three inches up were hot pink. When she arrived at my house her hair was wrapped tight sitting atop her head in a bun and all I saw was blonde. I reached down and yanked at her big toe to get her attention. She popped out of the water shaking her head side to side a little stunned that she had been disturbed from her watery solitude. “What did you do to your hair?” I asked. “Oh do you like it? I dyed it with Kool-Aid!” She said with excitement. “It’s a life hack I learned on the internet and all my friends did it too!” she said again with more excitement. “Well I guess I don’t mind it as long as it is just the ends but I don’t think you should be drinking anything that can also dye your hair!” I said as memories of all the Kool-Aid I drank growing up ran through my mind. I thought for a beat and then asked, “What about your mom and the school, what do they say?” Regan replied with a slight eye roll about the grilling questions, “Mom is ok with it and the school said only the ends and not when basketball starts next season.” Then she swam off to the deep end hot pink ends trailing behind and I was left to wonder what she would “life hack” next. I quickly decided that worrying would not be productive so I will let my mind wonder to the blissful world of decorating and spaces that can be used to wash the Kool-Aid out of my niece’s hair. Let take a peek into two bathrooms that make a statement with great art and a great shower curtain, somewhere in the heart of The Villages.
• Master BathStack-art-for-a-Statement
If you have a master bathroom with a large tub create a grand focal point on the wall above the tub. We did this by stacking two large pictures in the space. It really is eye catching and unexpected.
• Candles
Candles are great and we used them around the tub. We placed a clear glass ginger jar on the back step of the tub and filled it with shell and glass. We placed several electric candles inside and replaced the lid. The candles are operated by a remote so they can be used anytime. The beauty of this is all you have to do is dust the top of the ginger jar and it looks great!
• Small room grand style
Just because the guest bath is small does not mean that everything in it has to be small. Think big and think tall to increase the space visually.
• Start with the art
The art will inspire the space. In the guest bath the space above the toilet is a great space to hang a picture. The inspiration for the guest bath was a flamingo picture.
• Think Tall
Once the art was chosen, I found a curtain to complement the art. In the guest bath the color of the curtain tied into the coloring in the art and the large palm fronds add a tropical feeling. Once I had chosen the curtain I bought two of them. A semi-custom curtain can be made by piecing the two curtains together to create one long curtain. The length is usually 91 inches. The way to create a custom look is to use grosgrain ribbon or other types of ribbon, that complement the colors found in the curtain and cover the seam line. Finally, add a small ribbon band at the top of the curtain to visually tie the top of the curtain to the bottom. The curtain looks expensive and custom but it really is not!
• Rod
When the height of the curtain is increased, the rod must be very tight if it is a tension rod. If there will be lots of little grandkids that like to pull on things I have the rod installed into the wall with screws, so that it will not fall on little heads.
Also, I buy the rings that have bearings. The bearing balls allow for a smooth glide along the rod.
• Towels
All towels should be useable, not just decorative. I buy two of every color that is in the curtain. This way, they can be changed up and all the colors will complement the curtain and the art.
• Rugs
I like to put a rug in the bathroom that complements the curtain. Remember, it does not have to match it just has to coordinate. If you are worried about slipping, put a non-slip rug pad underneath the rug.
• Basket on toilet
I usually place a small basket on top of the toilet filled with extra wash clothes for convenient storage. Also, I like having guest napkins or paper towels in the bathroom, especially during cold and flu season.
