I stared at the picture on my computer screen and imagined the sound of palms clacking in the ocean breeze. I involuntarily curled my toes against cool bamboo flooring imagining that it was the southernmost sand. I had been scrolling through Facebook and was prompted to take a visual tour of Key West with “Island Jane” and I did! I could feel the soft salty wind moving around me on my morning walk and hear the sound of roosters calling from the front porches and side streets of their little island. I love looking at the architecture of the island homes and if you look close enough you will find lots of molding. The outside of houses are adorned with mostly white trim molding and lots of fretwork or “gingerbread” on front porches. The white trim adds a beautiful bright contrast that is quite eye catching to the colorful island homes. I was pulled back to reality when my email icon popped up asking me to open pictures that I just sent to myself. So take a tour with me and let’s take a peek into the living room of a Grandview to see how molding transformed it, somewhere in the heart of The Villages.
The main color of the home was a cool gray when homeowners moved in. We repainted the cool gray to a warm gray called Popular gray. I love the depth of the color and the undertone of tan to keep it looking warm and inviting.
• Crown molding
Crown molding all around the room! That is a must and with ceiling that high it had to be seven inch crown.
We installed white wainscoting around the room to add white pops back into the space. The white wainscoting looks amazing and pops against all the dark furniture. The Grandview has high ceilings and large rooms. The wainscot helps break up the “bigness” of the walls and the space feels more comfortable and scalable to the human proportion.
• Niche molding
The niches are always great features in the Grandview model but so often the question is what to do with them? We installed molding around the niche to define it and painted the back walls of the niche festoon aqua. The niche will stand out and help display things nicely.
• Television niche
The TV niche did not get molding but it did get festoon aqua on the back wall to make it stand out.
• Window molding
The windows and shutters all received molding and headers to create a finished and dramatic look. The windows will never have to change in this space.
• Ceiling tray molding
These ceilings are so high that adding molding to the tray looks great and provides an opportunity for some accent lighting. The key to a great tray is molding at the bottom and the top. We painted the band between the moldings to highlight the molding. I usually only paint the band if the molding is on the top and the bottom otherwise it looks unfinished.
• Accent lighting
L.E.D. ribbon lighting was installed in the bottom molding of the tray. That molding is called cove molding so that lights can be installed in the cove. The lights shine up onto the band of Festoon aqua that was painted in between the molding on the tray.
• Arched mirror
Any time there is an opportunity to capture light then catch it! The double doors lead into the Master suite and the angle of the entry way is opposing sliding glass doors. We put the arched mirror there to capture the light and look like a window. It makes a grand and unexpectedly dramatic statement!
The art is amazing and it only took two large amazing pieces to finish this large space. We placed Bahia Honda Sunrise over the sofa for the start to any good day. This is a piece of Florida History and a great conversation piece. Finally, in the dinette space we place Dramatic Ending. This is a dramatic sunset that was captured by the fine arts photographer of Florida Alan Maltz off of Key West. What a great way to end the day!
