Indoor - Outdoor Fun

Written by

This time of year all Floridians look forward to the fall temperatures and they have arrived! Not because the leaves change and everything will be awash in amber tones but because the air is crisp and humidity free. Daytime golf is tolerable and glow in dark golf is ramping up soon. Gentle cool breezes rolling over hills on golf courses make everything pleasant. If you are lucky those breezes will move through the open birdcage or screened in lanai as you enjoy cocktail hour with your friends and watch the sun go down on another great day. Over time most who move to Florida figure out why Southerners have covered porches. The sun is too intense to allow it to shine on you for too long. Also, the summers are too wet, too hot and too damp to enjoy your lovely outdoor furniture, even if it is quick dry Sunbrella fabric. Let’s take a peek into a space that is usable both inside and out, no matter the weather, somewhere in the heart of The Villages.
• Glass in LanaiCurtains-provide-Visual-Bang-for-the-Buck
The homeowners decided the screened in lanai was often too wet or too dirty to enjoy anything. They still wanted big windows and lots of light along with the ability to open the room to enjoy cross breezes in the fall. They also wanted the covered roof lanai to open to a birdcage that would allow for a green egg and fire pit. This is a great space because all the doors can be opened allowing the outdoor space and the indoor space to flow together seamlessly.
• Flooring
The homeowners wanted the look of wood but wood cannot be used in an area that will get wet. We chose the next best thing, tile that looks like wood. The long planks were laid running with the length of the room. It looks amazing and warms up the space! If you are considering hard wood for a space but cannot have the real thing tile wood is the next best!
• Entertaining
The homeowners wanted a multifunctional space that invited people to linger. We decided that the corner space would be a great nook. To create this we purchased an upholstered banquet bench in a deep charcoal fabric. What you see in the picture is two benches and a corner bench. These three pieces are pushed together to create the banquet of seating. They are movable should the homeowners ever need extra seating anywhere else in the home and they are comfortable. The table has a pedestal base which is the “must have” to allow people to slide in and out of the benched portion of the table. The extra chairs are clear acrylic and a replica of the famous Philippe Starck “ghost chair”. The chairs provide a touch of high end design and uniqueness to the space.
• Lighting
The homeowners found a trendy polished nickel pendent chandelier to hang above the table for extra lighting and it delineates the space nicely.
• Window treatments
This homeowner likes color! The main body of the house has royal blue, with teals, and pops of red and yellow. However, on the lanai we decided to pop the royal blue. We purchased indoor outdoor Sunbrella curtains ninety five inches long. They were hung right up to the ceiling on polished nickel rods. These curtains provide visual bang and draw the eye upward. They can sway in the breeze when the windows are open and they will resist fading. I love the way they look!
• Two recliners in the center of the room
These two recliners look amazing when you walk into the front door of this Gardenia; they provide a great focal point to draw visitors into the space. Also, they are fabulous for reading due to all the natural light. Finally, the recliners can swivel toward the table or the other side of the room which has a huge TV and a built in bar. This is a great entertaining area for everyone!
• Outdoor birdcage
The outdoor birdcage is a great space but as most people discover over time, the homeowners realized that a cage without a cover is mostly unusable in July, August and September. They had an awning installed over the top of the birdcage but I took the picture before it was installed. They will have a happy fall season with this covered because the room takes on the feeling of a covered southern porch. Also, adding the awning creates better air flow through the space. Love it!
