The sky filled with white diamonds that trickled down in wonderful blooms sparkling as they descended toward earth. The Boom! Boom! Sounds were a loud and an unexpected surprise to see from our room at the Yacht Club just outside of Epcot. We were staying for the Food and Wine Festival and chose this property because it can be accessed by walking from Epcot. We did not know that we would get to see the most amazing fireworks display from our own balcony! What is it about light in the night sky that is so fascinating? Though we can’t be at Disney every night to see the fireworks, nature provides us with a spectacular light show every night in the form of sunsets! Everyone loves a beautiful sunset; you can’t help but look as the horizon explodes with amazing color each night. In the world of decorating can we all have these spectacular scenes no matter where you live? Let’s take a peek into a Gardenia model in which the homeowners enjoy nature’s fireworks from sunrise to sunset somewhere in the heart of The Villages.
• Welcome to the light
This room was dark! Let’s dissect why it was dark. Often time’s people think that dark furniture makes a room dark but it is not. Rooms are dark because of the use of light and the way light moves through the space. In a Gardenia, the living room has two windows and light is pouring through these windows toward the room. When the human eye looks at two windows full of light everything that is in the surrounding vicinity will appear darker especially if the furniture is dark already. This is a function of the human eye that cannot be changed. So in design we would never want to place the largest darkest piece of furniture between two windows because it will look darker and therefore bigger.
• Change the focus
In this model, we find the most inviting way to set up the living room is by moving the Entertainment unit off of the wall between the windows. We usually, place the entertainment unit on the wall opposing the slider. This wall is receiving lots of light reflecting on it because light is coming through the large opening that was the slider and is now an enclosed lanai. The entertainment unit will look lighter, smaller, and less imposing with light shining on it.
• Seating pieces
The couch originally floated in the middle of the room opposite the entertainment unit. Upon entering the front door, the couch was backlit by all the light pouring in the sliding door. This made the couch look darker than it is and much larger. We moved the couch to the wall between the windows which will allow us to lighten it by placing powerful artwork above it. Even though the couch is dark it does not seem as imposing as the entertainment unit. The love seat was placed opposing the entertainment unit creating a faux sectional with the sofa. We still have room to place the recliner at a slight angle into the room. One more chair was added to the mix, a light teal occasional chair, beside the entertainment unit. We angled the chair in toward the space rounding out the seating area nicely. We increased seating and accessibility to the room. Also, the room feels so big now!
• Bring the space to life
We added light and life to the space with a sunrise and a sunset! The canvas over the sofa is a sunset in Naples and the canvas over the loveseat is a sunrise in Hollywood Florida titled, “Pathway to Paradise”!
We added two hammered metal lamps with a greenish glaze. They look amazing on the existing side tables.
The rug pulled it all together! This rug has subtle tones of all the colors in the room. It visually completes the space and covers the outlet in the floor.
• Accent pillows
I often am asked, “Why do I need these pillows? They will just end up on the floor.” The pillows encourage the design concept called rhythm. This is the spreading of the same color around the room like a consistent beat in a song. The consistent beat of a song ties it all together just like the consistent dispersing of color around a room. Accent pillows are an inexpensive way to achieve rhythm.
The room looks larger, lighter and brighter! Most of all it looks inviting because you can easily enter the space. Love it!
