I spread out my arms and fell back into the billowy white bedding. It felt wonderful! Having just finished a fabulous massage it was time to reap the benefits with a pre-dinner nap. I love amazing hotel bedding because it is always white, fresh and simple. There are no distractions in a hotel room, nothing to be cleaned, no animals to feed, and no laundry to fold; instead I heard just the sounds of the ocean and wind moving through palm fronds. I closed my eyes being very relaxed but sleep did not come, instead my mind was filled with decorating and I wondered how I could use these hotel chic ideas at home. Let’s take a look at the master bedroom of the home from last week, where the only distraction is relaxation, somewhere just beyond the heart of The Villages.
The homeowners love white, glass, gray and peacefulness. They wanted an upscale look but they wanted it to be highly functional, warm and inviting. The space was designed with relaxation in mind.
The homeowners requested gray paint but they still wanted the space to feel warm. Gray can be tricky because if you choose a color that is too gray the space can feel cold. So again, we chose Popular Gray; this is gray with a brownish undertone that provides a sense of warmth. If you want a light gray, this one is perfect!
• The secret
The secret to making a light gray work is to pop the white! As you can see in the picture we used lots of white.
• Crown molding
The ceilings in this room are very high so we used seven inch crown molding. This size molding shows up on high walls, pops against the gray and provides an overall sense of finish to the space. We also added crown molding to the tray ceilings. We painted the ceiling of the tray a few shades darker to enhance the tray ceilings.
The windows are very large and privacy was an issue. We decided to have white shutters installed. The shutters add a huge pop of white to the space and they have their own casement molding, so that the window looks finished. We could have stopped at shutters but the homeowner wanted a bit more.
The master bedroom should have a sense of softness. We installed 108” white side panels, two on each side of the shutter, for luxurious fullness. The window treatment is hung outside the window so that the edge grazes the side of the shutter, creating the illusion that the window is even larger than it looks. I love the look! These window treatments are off the rack too!
• Upholstered headboard
The homeowners decided to buy a cream upholstered headboard with deep diamond tufting. I love it! It is perfectly fine to mix cream and white and the homeowner chose all white bedding. It looks so dreamy and fresh!
• Side tables
We chose mirrored side tables with the look of nail head around the face of the side table. They have a bit of a modern look but the nail head adds a touch of tradition. This added the silvery sparkle that the room needed.
The lamps are simple and clear. Clear glass and silver can make an elegant statement in a space.
The art above the bed is pencil etchings. The repetition of black, white and touches of crème are repeated in the art. Hanging them all together looks very elegant and perfectly complements the space.
