Cozy Cove

Last week we looked at how to finish the main body of a Newport Courtyard model and this week we will show some ideas for finishing the master bedroom. There are components that make up a great master bedroom no matter what the style of the bedroom. A master bedroom should have color, texture, inviting bedding, and the ability to become really dark for a good sleep. When a master bedroom is located directly off the main living room the décor of the room should coordinate with the main body of the house so that when the door is open the space does not look disjointed. In most models the master bedroom can be seen from the main body of the home. The homeowners did a great job decorating the space but needed ideas to make the room look and feel finished. The master bedroom is often overlooked and becomes a collection point for random pieces of furniture, but it should not be that way. The master bedroom should look coordinated with the rest of the home, and it should be an inviting cozy cove. Let’s see how adding a few finishes to the space can make it look connected to the main body and make the space look finely tuned and finished somewhere in the heart of The Villages.

  •  Definition of Grass clothCozy Cove, master bedroom, Interior Design - by Ruth Dyer.
The best way to describe grass cloth is to say that it is woven grass fibers on paper that can be pasted to the wall. The grass fibers can be jute, sisal, or hemp. Grass cloth is a great wall treatment that can add warmth to a space, elevate the room, and add texture. Grass cloth has been fashionable forever and is considered a classic application wall treatment. As with many things that wax and wane with popularity grass cloth has seen a resurgence in 2024.

  •  Grass cloth
The homeowner wanted to add grass cloth to the back wall, and I thought that was a great idea. They chose a deep navy blue that coordinates with the greyish furniture. When an accent wall is done in wallpaper it has a better look than paint because it adds texture as well. Texture is very important to an accent wall because it gives it dimension and depth. The deep navy-blue color blends well with the furniture and I love the white pop of the shutter above the bed. Finally, the deep color on the wall allows the headboard to have more color because it can be seen through the cutouts on the bed and the clear glass lamps show nicely with a pop of color behind them.

  •  Deep color
I want to address choosing a deep color because so often my customers want light bright and airy. This deep color wall works because there is a large window that lets in so much light. Light is shining on the paper, so we get to see the color and textural depth of the paper. Finally, the homeowner only wallpapered one wall, so the space stayed nice and light. If you are considering this and are afraid of the expense, I would investigate it because this paper was not overly expensive.

  •  Paint
The rest of the walls were painted a soft warm grey. I would not wallpaper a wall then leave the other walls unfinished, the other walls must be painted in an eggshell sheen to bounce the light in the space. Tip: I would never leave the contractor flat paint in a space. Even if you take the same wall color that is flat and paint it in an eggshell or satin, you will be amazed at how much better the walls will look.

  •  Ceiling treatment
The tray in the ceiling is a feature that is installed in the home to create a volume ceiling. I like the treatment that the homeowners installed on the ceiling tray. The treatment is simple boxes that complement the shape and a boarder of trim around the perimeters of the tray. The top of the tray was painted white, and the band of the tray was painted the soft warm grey. The ceiling looks treated and finished and maintains the high light look.

  •  Rug
The rug fits the space beautifully and repeats the deep color on the floor. I like the small print in the rug that pops a bit of light and I like the effect of a darker rug in the space because the large window keeps the space very light.

  •  White bedding
The white bedding looks so inviting! The homeowners went with simplicity and neutral colors. The touch that connects the bed to the accent wall and rug is the long lumbar pillow that has navy blue hues.

  •  Small window
The small window above the bed was fitted with a shutter. This makes the window look like a feature and allows the light to come in or the shutter can stay shut and it still looks amazing.

  •  Large window
The large window treatment is the best part of the whole package! The window was trimmed out and a simple cornice was added to the top. The privacy treatment that was installed is a top-down bottom- up cellular blind by Hunter Douglas. This blind is electric and runs on a remote or your phone. The homeowners had the ability to have the blind completely hidden under the cornice or they can have just the top down to get the light. This is great for a master bedroom because you will get the light and the privacy at the same time. I love the color grey the homeowners chose for the cellular blind because they will keep the blind in the position shown most of the time. The color works well with the navy’s and grey’s in the space. Finally, these treatments make the room very dark at night for deep sleep.
