Luxurious Lanai
Dappled sunlight peppers the ground beneath the outstretched arms of the great live oak tree. Thatch palms nestle close to its trunk, their soft fronds creating a quiet refuge where mourning doves slip in and out to feed on scattered seed. Beyond the palms, the western sky glows over the marsh as groups of Sandhill Cranes drift in as if summoned by magic, gathering to roost for the night in this peaceful paradise. The homeowners wanted to enjoy this nightly ritual from the wide, uninterrupted view of their lanai, so they chose to enclose the space and create a comfortable, luxurious retreat they could enjoy throughout the year. Let’s peek into the lovely lanai transformation of this Laurel Oak Model somewhere in the heart of The Villages.
• The Enclosing
The lanai is generous in size, and the view from this home stretches out in a way that feels almost endless, yet an open lanai in Florida can be a challenge. In the spring the weather is pleasant, but everything gathers a fine layer of yellow pollen. In the summer it is often too hot or too damp to enjoy for long. Fall brings relief, though it usually follows a full cleanup from the summer season. Winter can be unpredictable, sometimes too chilly to sit outside unless you have a fireplace to take the edge off. Florida is beautiful, but it is not California, and outdoor living rarely matches the dream you had in mind. The best thing a homeowner can do is enclose the lanai and enjoy the view in comfort all year long.
• Tile floor
Once the lanai was enclosed, the next step was choosing the right flooring. The interior of the home features a beautiful, engineered hardwood, and we wanted the transition into the lanai to feel as seamless as possible. We selected a tile that closely matches the look of the hardwood inside the main living areas. The tile brings warmth to the lanai and visually connects it to the rest of the home, creating a unified and inviting space.
• Applied molding
The walls that were once part of the open lanai still had the original exterior stucco finish, but now that the space functions as an interior room, that texture no longer felt appropriate. Rather than covering everything with drywall, we chose to add wood treatments to the exposed walls. The cement columns that once supported the exterior screens were wrapped in molding to create a refined wood finish, then painted white. Every wall received the same combination of wood and molding, also painted white, giving the room a cohesive look. The result feels finished and far more elevated than standard drywall.
• Ceiling treatment
The ceiling is one of my favorite details in this transformation. We covered the original surface with beadboard, and even at eight feet high it immediately draws the eye upward and gives the room a beautiful focal point. Painted in a crisp white, the ceiling keeps the space bright and airy. This treatment adds a another layer of refinement, offering a timeless and unexpected touch.
• Fireplace
The homeowners planned to spend many hours in this room, and they wanted the comfort and atmosphere that only a fireplace can bring. The fireplace surround was built and finished with a stacked stone that reflects their personal style. The fireplace itself is electric, allowing the glow of a full flame even on the hottest Florida days without adding heat. When the temperature dips, they can simply turn on the heat feature to take the chill out of the room. One fun feature of the fireplace is the crackling sound of the wood. It puts you right in a cozy mood.
• Non-glare TV
I am not sure why it has taken so long for non-glare television technology to become widely available, but it truly is impressive. The homeowners have nothing but windows in this room, which meant the TV was always washed in reflections. They purchased a new indoor non-glare television, and even though it hangs in a space filled with light, the screen stays clear. The picture is crisp, sharp, and easy to enjoy at any time of day.
• Swivel recliners
The recliners the homeowners selected can swivel a full circle, allowing them to turn toward the marsh or settle in for a quiet evening with the TV. They are slim in shape yet wonderfully comfortable, with a footrest that tucks neatly beneath the seat when not in use. They were an investment, but when you are seeking everyday luxury, it is always worth it.
• Indoor outdoor rugs
We chose large indoor-outdoor rugs to bring in a bold pop of green. This style is thin yet incredibly durable, which keeps the surface smooth and eliminates any tripping concerns. To keep everything securely in place, we used Alien Tape along the edges. If you have not tried it, the square pads are excellent for anchoring rugs to almost any surface without causing damage. I have used them on my bamboo flooring for years with no issues, and they hold beautifully.
• Seating area
The room was spacious enough to include a dining area, a spot for the homeowners to watch TV or take in the marsh, and a full seating area for visiting friends. We placed a couch along the back of the lanai and positioned two swivel chairs facing it to create an easy, natural conversation zone. The couch also happens to be the perfect place for an afternoon nap, or so I am told.
• Pineapple Lamps
The homeowners already had a tropical look inside the home, and we wanted to carry that same green forward tropical touch onto the lanai. The large pineapple lamps from Thailand became instant showstoppers. Each one is handmade, and beyond providing soft lighting on a remote control, they stand as truly stunning works of art.
