The Overture

The lights go down and there is a moment of perfect silence before a single note rises into the ether. Attention gathers toward the stage as a melody floats, note by note, encircling everyone in the room. These early measures offer hints of what is to come. A bright lilt from the flute or the deeper, more mysterious voice of the oboe can shape the entire mood of the evening. It is the amuse bouche that awakens the senses and stirs anticipation before the theater curtain lifts. What am I describing you ask? The foyer to your home, of course. In the world of decorating, the foyer is every bit as important as the overture to a great play, yet it is so often treated as an afterthought. Let’s step inside two foyers, the first is an Iris model and the second is a Zinna model to see how a beautiful overture can invite your guests to want more, somewhere in the heart of The Villages.

  •  Foyer #1The blue and white are popping, Interior Design - in the Villages of Florida.
This foyer is dramatic. The homeowners inherited a home with navy blue accent walls, and the contrast from navy to white was so stark that having only one wall painted in the darker color did not look good. We chose to paint the entire foyer in the navy accent color and create balance with generous white molding. The white keeps the space bright while allowing the deep color to feel rich rather than heavy.

  •  Front Door Makeover
The front door has been completely transformed with new molding. The sidelights and the transom above the door now feel connected because we added larger molding that visually unifies everything. When you look back into the foyer, the entry door becomes a stunning focal point, framed in crisp white against the dramatic navy walls.

  •  More white
The navy-blue walls look even better when paired with crisp white accents. To bring more of that brightness into the space, we added a sixty-four-inch-tall mirror. Its sculpted frame has the movement of gentle waves, and the white finish has a subtle coral quality that feels right at home in Florida. The height of the mirror draws the eye upward and creates a greater sense of space in the foyer. Many homeowners hesitate when it comes to tall mirrors, but if you have the ceiling height, it is always worth going as high as you can. A mirror cannot overpower a room because it reflects light, and there is no such thing as too much reflected light. A tall mirror simply expands the space and brings more brightness into the home.

  •  Entry chest
We paired the white mirror with a wood toned entry chest. The chest offers generous hidden storage, and the warm wood complements all the blue and white in the foyer. In true overture fashion, this first touch of wood prepares the eye for the additional warm tones that appear throughout the home. It sets the visual palette and creates a subtle transition as visitors move from the foyer into the main living spaces. The chest has four drawers, and the fronts echo the wave pattern found in the mirror above it, creating a conversation between the two pieces. A white lamp with a palm leaf pattern cut into the shade sits on top, and when the lamp is on, the pattern glows beautifully and casts soft shadows across the foyer. The chest is further accessorized with a piece of cup coral, a beautiful vase, and a string of blue stones draped over the coral. Together, these elements create an inviting vignette that begins the coastal story of the home.

  •  Two palm leaves
We needed artwork that would truly call to the visitor and pull them into the space. We chose two very large palm leaf canvases in white floating frames. They stand out beautifully against the navy walls and stacking them creates a strong vertical line that balances the grand height of the mirror. The scale, the color, and the placement work together to draw the eye forward and set the tone for the rest of the home.

  •  Large, angled Rug
This foyer looks wonderful with a large rug, even though we needed to place it on an angle. The foyer itself is angled, and positioning the rug the same way follows the natural line of the room, which makes the layout feel intentional. The rug is washable and soft, and it carries all the colors found in the foyer and in the space just beyond it. At five by seven feet, it is the perfect size to anchor the entry and tie the entire palette together.

  •  Foyer #2
Foyer number two is warm minimalism, and it has a calming effect on everyone who enters. The walls are a soft grey, and the front door is framed with molding similar to the first foyer, though this homeowner preferred a more understated look. You cannot see it in the photo, but the trim is made from simple flat stock boards with no embellishment. That choice keeps the lines clean and the overall feeling quiet and minimal, which suits the mood of the home.

  •  Family Gallery wall
The homeowners wanted a family photo wall, and the foyer was the perfect place to create it. They had six black and white photographs; each framed with a black frame and a generous white matting that gave the collection a gallery quality. We hung them together in the foyer, and the arrangement brings both the warmth of family and the visual presence of an art installation. Together, the images create a welcoming statement that invites visitors to pause and take in the story of the people who live here.

  •  Foyer Table
The foyer table is a simple but elegant stone piece. We placed a lamp, a tray for keys, a few family photos, and a vase with eucalyptus stems to bring a natural touch into the space. The mirror above the table is tall because it belonged to the homeowners, and it works well here. If they ever decide they want even more height, a larger mirror could easily be hung and would look just as beautiful.

  •  Rug
The rug was inherited with the house, and it works beautifully with everything in the foyer and with the living room just beyond it. At five by eight feet, it fills the space nicely and gives the entry a grounded, finished look. A foyer always benefits from a rug that fully occupies the space. Smaller rugs tend to feel like something is missing, while a well-sized rug creates a sense of welcome the moment you step inside.Call Ruth your full service decorator at: 352-804-2056
