Sunset Time of Day
There is something about a winter sunset on the southernmost side of Key West. The whole island exhales and you feel the end of day wash over you. The breathy call of the mourning doves drifts through the air like a sigh, always somewhere out there and somehow all around you at the same time. It seems as if every gaze is drawn to the soft wash of light just beyond the line where the sky meets the sea. Soft pink gives way to soft coral that melts into a golden glow, growing weaker against the night that comes. The colors remain distinct yet merge gently, the way pigments blend across an oil painting. In the distance you hear the soft ting-ting of metal tapping a mast or maybe a flagpole. These sounds become a calming backdrop, a kind of soft white noise that deepens the atmosphere. Arms reach out and pull loved ones close as once again we all exhale. The day has ended and it is time to rest, to relax, to settle into the space around you. Your master bedroom should welcome you in just this way, a whispered invitation to exhale and unwind. Let’s peek into the master bedroom of an Iris model to see how a relaxing sunset can set the tone of the space somewhere in the heart of The Villages.
• Wall Color
The wall color had to be soft, and it had to feel like the air around you. We chose a neutral green based blue called Windowpane SW6210. It brings just enough color to saturate the walls while keeping the room bright, and it settles into the space so naturally that it feels almost weightless, like the air itself has taken on a gentle tint. The volume ceiling tray was trimmed in molding, and the same wall color was carried onto the exposed drywall in
side the tray. The effect is subtle and seamless. The room feels calm and welcoming, the kind of space that invites you to breathe a little deeper the moment you step inside.
• Rug
We decided to use the same rug in the bedroom that we used in the living room, the antelope pattern rug. It is by Ballard Designs and offers both great style and a great price. The blue is exactly right for the space, and the homeowners appreciate how closely the rugs coordinate since the bedroom door is always open and sits just off the living room. The continuity helps the two spaces speak to each other in a cohesive way.
• First Piece of Art
The first piece of art you see when entering the room, and even from the living room, is a large winter sunset framed between two palm trees in greyscale. It is an image I have seen in person, and it captures everything I love about a winter sunset in Key West. Because it is visible from the living room, we wanted it to feel captivating the moment it comes into view. The canvas is sixty inches high and forty inches wide, a size that allows it to make a true statement and evokes the feeling that you are standing right there between the palms. Below the picture we placed a large seagrass basket. It looks beautiful sitting there on its own, but it also serves a purpose, holding all the bedding at night and keeping the room feeling calm and uncluttered.
• Second Piece of Art
After you take in the first piece of art, look to the right and your eye moves through green palm fronds, across pale sand, and into deep blue water. It feels like an invitation. You can almost imagine wading into that blue or simply lying on the bed and letting the sense of calm wash over you. The picture above the bed is seventy-two inches wide and twenty-four inches high, framed in a floating frame that gives it a finished, elevated look. The sunset is also framed in a floating frame. When purchasing a canvas, it is always worth choosing the floating frame option, which most online vendors now offer. It adds a level of polish that helps the artwork look finished.
• Bedding
The bedding is an essential part of the room. We began with a base layer that feels absolutely divine. The coverlet is white linen, and yes, linen is the right choice here. This one comes from Pottery Barn, and it is soft with a natural drape that falls beautifully over the bed. The diamond quilt pattern adds soft texture, and it is washable again and again. Each wash makes it even softer, which is one of the reasons it has become my all-time favorite coverlet. To finish the bed, we created a custom set. We selected a Tommy Bahama blue tropical palm print fabric and sent it to the upholsterer, who crafted three Euro pillows and a bed scarf. This brings color and pattern to the room while keeping the process of making the bed simple and effortless. The result is a bed that feels inviting and easy to maintain, the perfect balance for a relaxing master bedroom.
• Furniture
The furniture in this room is coordinated rather than purchased as a set, which gives the space a more collected and curated feel. The bed is a seagrass design that brings warmth and texture, grounding the room with its natural weave. The side tables are a light wood that complements the tones of the bed, and both the side tables and the dresser are topped with marble. A stone surface means you never have to worry about scratching the wood, and it adds a touch of luxury. If you have wood furniture, you can visit any granite yard and have a piece cut to fit your tops. It is an easy upgrade that instantly elevates the furniture and makes it far more functional.
• Stationary curtains
We added white linen curtains to all sides of the windows to soften the room. They bring a gentle movement to the space, the kind you associate with an island breeze drifting through an open window. The white drapes filter the light in a way that keeps the room bright while adding a layer of calm, and they help the entire space feel relaxed and welcoming.
• One large mirror
We installed one very large mirror on the left wall. It reflects light beautifully and helps keep the room feeling open, but it also serves a practical purpose. It offers a quick glance before stepping out into the world, a simple way to make sure everything is in place before facing the day. The scale of the mirror adds presence without overwhelming the room.
• Permanent botanical
We added a seven-foot fiddle leaf fig in the corner of the room. This adds texture and brings the outdoors in without having to water!
