Dark and Moody Done Right

Your first home in The Villages may not always be your perfect home. It is not uncommon for my clients to move several times searching for their perfect home. This week the homeowners that are featured have moved around The Villages trying to find the “perfect home” for…. let’s just say a few more than several years. Finally, they found their perfect beautiful nest and they wanted to try something different in their new space. For those of you who read my column you know that light, bright and airy is always the request but with color coming back into vogue it is only fitting that we show a room saturated in deep color. This bedroom invites traditional style to live in harmony with modern pieces and the room still has plenty of light so that it does not feel heavy. Let’s take a peek into the primary suite of a customized model inspired by a rug that has traveled from home to home somewhere in the heart of The Villages.

  •  RugDark, Moody, Bedroom, primary suite, Interior Design - by Ruth Dyer.
It all started with the rug. This rug was purchased let’s just say…. more than several years ago and it has been in different rooms in different homes. Each time it would be placed the homeowner would live with it while for a while and then later say, I am not sure…. “I think I am going put this rug in storage and get a new one.” So, the rug would go back into storage to be used another day. That day has come! I think the rug makes such a beautiful statement with the pattern and the colors. The rug was laid in the space to look as long as possible. I like the fact that the homeowners will be walking fully on the rug. This makes less of a tripping hazard. The rug is a wool rug, and it is super soft for the homeowners’ feet. The colors in the rug became the inspiration for the space.

  •  Wall treatment
The wall behind the bed has a wood treatment. The homeowners wanted to have a wall treatment installed but they wanted something different than board and batten boxes. Since applying wood to the walls is a totally customized treatment the homeowners worked with the trim carpenter to create their own unique pattern. The pattern is modern looking, and it provides interest and texture to the focal wall behind the bed. The temptation when creating a focal wall would be to just paint the focal wall the dark color but that does not create a finished looking space that is moody. The secret to a finished looking space is that all the walls in the space must be painted the dark color.

  •  Paint
The paint was chosen from the rug. The blue in the center pattern of the rug is so close to the color of the wall it is hard to tell the difference when you are in the space. The secret to creating a fully finished space is to commit to the paint the color and paint the entire room. When there is a hard break from dark to light it looks as if you forgot to paint the rest of the walls, or it is reminiscent of dark accent walls that were so popular in the late eighties or early nineties. We all had one!

  •  Headboard
The furniture in the suite has been with the homeowner for let’s just say…. more than several years. It was time to get a new headboard and bed, but the side tables and dresser were still beautiful! The homeowners found a tall headboard with cream fabric that looked beautiful against the blue wall color. Since the treatment on the wall was the feature there was no need for art above the bed. The headboard is traditional, and it looks good against the modern wall.

  •  Mirrored furniture
The mirrored furniture looks extra good in a room with darker paint. The furniture adds light because it is reflective, and it bounces the color through the space because it reflects the blue color. The furniture adds to the color saturation of the room.

  •  Large leaner mirror
The large leaner mirror is a large mirror and jewelry box. The large center mirror opens and all the homeowner’s jewelry and much more can be stored inside the center space. This mirror is attached to the wall with an L bracket so that it is very safe to use every day. The large mirror opposite the window adds so much light back into the space that the light feels balanced in the room. Though the room is saturated with a darker color it does not feel like a dark space.

  •  Abstract Art
A large abstract art piece has been hung on the wall opposite the window as well, and it is one of the most prominent things that you see when you enter the space. The art has so much light from the window that it keeps it bright and the colors blend with all the colors in the space. I like the abstract art in this space because the colors play well with the modern wall treatment and the traditional furniture.

  •  Lamps
The lamps have been with the homeowner for a bit, and they cast beautiful light on the wall behind the side table. The color of the lamps is neutral, almost a concrete color but the blue complements that color so well.

  •  Chandelier
The traditional crystal chandelier looks amazing all lit up! The crystal juxtaposed with the modern wall looks so amazing that I don’t even miss the ceiling fan!

  •  Windows
With such large windows creating a dark moody sleep space could be challenging! However, the homeowners added a honeycomb blind that is hidden by blending into the woodwork. The window treatment drops down with the touch of a button to create a dark and pleasant sleep space. The side panels are soft white. They are hung high to soften the space and create a finished window, but they are not meant to move.
