Green Harmony

You have probably noticed while shopping that you are seeing more green available in the marketplace than you have in years. Green is a wonderful color that represents positive qualities such as harmony, wellbeing, renewal, and growth. Those are all positive qualities. I am happy that the decorating world has embraced green once again because it is now easier than ever to find furnishings and accessories that help create a green forward space. I usually ask my clients what their favorite color is, and when these homeowners said green, I was excited to begin designing. Inspired by the wonder of nature and the restorative power of green, we created a space that feels calm, welcoming, and connected to the natural world. Layers of green throughout the home bring a sense of balance and renewal while creating an atmosphere that is both comfortable and uplifting. Let’s peek into a Stony Brook Courtyard Villa to see a space that is heavy on green and harmonious somewhere in the heart of The Villages.

  •  Where did we beginbalanced and inviting, Green, Stony Brook Courtyard Villa, Interior Design - by Ruth Dyer.
We began with the rug. We needed something with plenty of color, but it also had to read as green forward. We discovered this rug online at Ballard Designs and it is called the Carli Hand Tufted Rug. The traditional pattern brought a timeless feel to the space, while the palette of green, blue, cream, and touches of pumpkin provided both warmth and visual interest. The rug measures nine by twelve and is made from wool, making it as practical as it is beautiful. Wool is naturally stain resistant, durable, and easy to maintain. For most small spots and spills, a touch of baby shampoo and a damp cloth are all it takes to keep it looking fresh and beautiful.

  •  Sofa
The homeowners wanted to treat themselves to a truly comfortable sofa, and they settled on the Pinnacle from La-Z-Boy. This style has remained a favorite for years because it fits the average person exceptionally well. The back and headrest naturally provide support in all the right places, creating a comfortable seating experience without feeling oversized or bulky. The cushioning offers just the right amount of softness, while built-in lumbar support enhances overall comfort. The adjustable headrest can be raised or lowered to suit each individual, making it easy to find the perfect position for reading, watching television, or relaxing. The sofa was upholstered in a sandy tan leather, a beautiful neutral that adds warmth while helping to keep the room light. It is also a wall hugger design, requiring only two inches of clearance from the wall to fully recline, making it an excellent choice for maximizing both comfort and space.

  •  Kaylee Chairs
The homeowners added a heavy dose of green with a pair of Kaylee chairs and matching ottomans. As you’ve heard me rave before, the Kaylee is my all-time favorite occasional chair. Sitting in one feels like receiving a big, supportive hug that you never want to leave. The homeowners chose to have swivel only and not gliding. In an aging community, I am not a fan of gliding chairs. As we get older, we tend to sit down with a little more force, and a gliding chair can sometimes move unexpectedly. Gliding chairs can also be more challenging to get out of for those with mobility concerns. The Kaylee chair offers the best of both worlds. The swivel feature makes it easy to turn and engage in conversation or enjoy different views of the room, while the stationary base provides stability and support.

  •  Sandy Wingback
We still had room for a pair of occasional chairs on either side of the entertainment unit, so we continued the seating plan with the Sandy Wingback chairs from Uttermost. These chairs offer a fresh, updated take on the traditional wingback design. Their clean lines and lighter profile keep them from feeling heavy in the space while still providing comfortable seating. Another feature we loved was their lightweight construction. If the homeowners are entertaining, the chairs can easily be pulled forward to create additional conversational seating without much effort. To tie them into the room’s green color story, we added decorative pillows embroidered with palm trees. The vibrant green embroidery against the creamy upholstery provided just the right accent, adding personality and reinforcing the room’s connection to nature.

  •  Side tables and lamps
The side tables are the Kentmore tables from Uttermost, featuring a combination of black metal, gold metal, and glass. They add a touch of modernity to the room without feeling overly contemporary. The versatility of the black and gold finish allows them to blend beautifully with the traditional elements in the space while providing just the right amount of sophistication. To further enhance the green color story, we added a pair of rich green double gourd table lamps, also from Uttermost. A floor lamp peeks above the Sandy Wingback chair in the far-left corner, providing an additional layer of lighting and balance to the room. I always like to include at least three sources of task lighting in a space. Multiple light sources not only improve functionality but also create a warm, inviting ambiance in the evening.

  •  Art
The homeowners love graphic and interesting artwork that gives them something beautiful to enjoy every day. Since their favorite animal is the panda, we knew that a large-scale panda image would be the perfect focal point for the room. We found this stunning photographic canvas at Great Big Canvas.com, one of my favorite sources for artwork because most images are available in a variety of sizes, making it easy to find the perfect fit for a space. When purchasing artwork, I typically choose a gallery wrapped canvas and then add a floating frame for a more finished and custom look. This panda turned out beautifully and it is one of those pieces that is sure to bring the homeowners joy each time they walk into the space. The wall above the sofa features a piece titled, “Silver Palm Sunset”. This artwork introduces the calming beauty of a sunset while also drawing out the pumpkin accents found in the rug. The canvas measures 60 by 40 inches and fills the wall perfectly and provides a wonderful balance to the panda artwork. Finally, you will find two vintage palm tree prints above the chair in the left-hand corner of the room. Again, mixing the traditional with a touch of modern creates a well-balanced space.
