Decorating Tips

Updates to sell

When living in your own home it easy to become accepting of your homes flaws, but put the home on the market and the market will not be shy about pointing out those flaws. Years go by of living life happily in the home and all of the sudden golden oak cabinetry is out of style. When did bone colored appliance go away? In what year did hanging pot racks become unpopular and why is everyone getting black stainless steel…

Wish List

New home purchases usually come with a list of the things the new owner would like to change in the home to personalize the space. There is the grand wish list and the cost of the wish list and the task of spending the wish list money wisely.

The Power of Definition

My niece Regan does not like to be defined as a teenager now that she is thirteen. She argues that it sounds like a “generalization” and she does not want to be defined by age her group. At thirteen she is well versed on all things, just like most teenagers. She loves argumentation, sometimes just for the sake of argumentation, just like most teenagers. I see her testing her skills as we discuss current events of the day and she…

Take your time

When seasonal Floridians arrive they often arrive running! They have three months to fit in home projects, golf, various social activities and many visits from family and friends to fit into their schedule before they head home. It is no wonder that decorating in haste can often make waste. I like to encourage my clients to focus on two rooms and get them as close to finished as possible, and the rest can wait until next season.

Gathering Place

Car Keys, mail, a quarter cup of forgotten coffee, and a box of cat snacks are strewn about the counter of my kitchen island when I get home at the end of the day. About one hour later the aforementioned items have somehow found their home and the island is transformed into a food prep station. So many good things come from the island during this time of day. Especially, if people are visiting, we gather to watch, talk, and…

Farmhouse and Florida

My Grandmother’s farmhouse on Highway 54 in Zephyrhills was surrounded on three sides by lush orange groves as far as the eye could see. The scent of orange blossoms in April was so strong you could almost taste orange by breathing in the air. A kumquat tree adorned the front yard of that white clapboard home and palm trees ensconced it on each side.

La Dolce Vita

Many of my clients report with heavy sighs how much they had to give up in order to downsize but they seem happier when they are settled, as if a weight has been lifted. I rarely hear anyone lamenting that they had to let go of that extra set of china once it is gone. In fact it is the opposite.

Florida Infusion

Florida is more than a state; it is a state of mind. Like water working its way around every crevasse it encounters, Florida gets into your soul. It does not matter where you are from, the longer your flip flopped feet stay on Florida ground the more complete the transformation becomes. You experience joy when seeing sand hill cranes flying in unison, their large graceful wings silhouettes against the twilight sky. You will develop a desire to see sunsets on…

Welcome to the Light

After living in darkness and surviving brutal blizzards, the male Emperor Penguin gets to see his baby hatch. The baby that he has been holding on his feet in an egg for four months! He has at that point lost one half his body weight because he has not eaten in four months and he now has to feed and keep the new hatchling alive for a short time. Finally, the mother arrives back from her four month hunting vacation…

Fresh and Bright

You begin to notice it subtly, the golden yellow layer of dust on your car or your lanai furniture. Your nose seems to have a tickle and you sneeze within minutes of being outside. Each day Floridians check the pollen count and hope for that cleansing rain that will provide a bit of relief from the pollen mist. When you live in Florida; allergy pills, nose sprays and Kleenex are constant companions for many, including myself, but I would not…

Refresh and Renew

Usually from the last week of December into the first week of January is a super busy time for personal projects due Christmas decorations and travel of my clients. However, this year my personal projects extended into the end of January because I decided to do a few DIY things. So what were my personal projects you ask? My husband and I installed bead board onto the ceiling of our master bedroom and my office.
