Decorating Tips

Room with a View

Endless possibilities abound when the room is not focused on a TV. I love television but for these reading and birdwatching homeowners it was not a requirement. In fact, they were adamant about no TV in the living room because they have a fabulous view. The living room was set up to see the view and enjoy all that nature had to offer but they wanted to add more color to the space.

The Florida Life

Florida is more than a state; it is a state of mind. Like water working its way around every crevasse it encounters, Florida gets into your soul. It does not matter where you are from; the longer your flip flopped feet stay on Florida ground the more complete the transformation becomes.

The Art of Display

For me, the last few weeks of August consist of re-organizing and getting rid of all the clutter that has built up around my home. I don’t really understand where it all comes from and how it accumulates but it does. I drove to the donation center with a truck full of stuff which included a table that I dearly love. I was on the fence about donating the table even though it was in the truck. The nice young…

Quick Fix

I make my bed almost every day! I don’t do it to make sure that I am successful for the day or that I am not embarrassed to have someone see an unmade bed. I do it because at the end of the day, I love walking into a beautifully decorated and put together master bedroom. In my years of decorating I have found that the most ignored space is the master bedroom.

Dog Days

August is the hottest and most humid month of the year. The ancient Romans named these days “dies caniculares” meaning “Dog Days”. When we look to the stars to find the Roman inspiration for name “Dog Days”, we find Sirus the “Dog Star”. Sirus is the brightest star in the Canis Major constellation otherwise known as Large Dog and these are the days that the big dog shines his brightest.

Traditional Modernity

Use of mirrors in design has deep roots in the past. Louis XIV, a very stylized King, understood the use of mirrors for multiplication and used them frequently in palatial décor. In fact, The Hall of Mirrors was built to make a statement on the economic and the artistic triumphs of France. Most rooms with his stamp would have several mirrors reflecting chandeliers or window light, and definitely decadent art. You may not live in a French palace but certainly…

Old Florida

My Grandmother used tin foil against the windows of her living room to keep the hot Florida sun out. She could always be found with her feet on a pillow on the coffee table between 1 and 3 in the afternoon watching her “stories”.

Key West Time

On the last day of vacation, we decided to stay at the hotel beach all day and the weather was perfect! With the tide retreating and carrying away all the floating seaweed that is so prevalent in Key West, we were left to enjoy pure crystal green water! I grabbed my snorkel and mask and set out to see what I could see. Stingray were quite active kicking up sand as they moved from pier to pier and the occasional…

Living it Large

Fred the tree is still standing! He is an Australian pine tree that has been growing on the unusable portion of the old seven mile bridge otherwise known as The Oversees Highway. Fred has become an Icon of survival and perseverance since Irma could not take him down. He is a great testament to the power of putting down roots and sticking. At Christmas time he is a lighted beacon offering hope to all who pass by and he has…

Melting pot of Color

It is official, Key West was just named the “most excellent cities to visit” by Trip Advisor in an article in Southern Living. We are on a four day countdown until we leave and life will slow down to a lovely crawl. The tropical hot days will end with amazing sunsets full of brilliant color. Key West is a colorful melting pot of interesting things but they come together somehow and blend to create something unique, eclectic and now nationally…

Coastal Calm

Though I enjoyed the four days away with my niece and nephews; when kids are with you there is always something happening and the vacation is very active. Having said that, I am ready to sit in a chair at The Southernmost Beach Resort and stare for hours into crystalline water where the, “blue of the sky, meets the green of the sea”. The only sounds that I want to hear are the waves gently lapping against the sea wall,…
